Facebook is a popular and very useful social media tool, but some things are not quite obvious for newbies. For example, when you create an account in Facebook, your Facebook profile URL resembles this:
http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=123456789
How about changing this to something like below:
http://www.facebook.com/smith.john
Now, if you are on Facebook just to hangout with your school/college buddies, it doesn’t really make much difference to use either of these URLs. But if you have an active business blog/website and you want to use Facebook as your business networking manager, people might find it difficult to remember former profile URL. It might look weird as well on your blog to link to an ugly-looking profile URL.
So how do you get fancy-looking user-friendly URL like the one shown above for your Facebook profile? It’s very easy to assign an easy-to-remember name to your Facebook profile. Follow the below steps to grab one for your profile now:
- Log on to your Facebook account
- Go to http://www.facebook.com/username
- Select Facebook’s suggestions for username or create your own
- Click on Check Availability button to see if username is not already taken
- Click on Confirm once done.
Another great thing for bloggers/business owners is that they can use this facility to assign user-friendly names to their Facebook fanpages as well. Only caveat is that you need to have atleast 25 fans in order to be eligible to claim the name for fanpage. Also, be careful while choosing the name for your fanpage as you will not be able to change it once confirmed. So what are you waiting for? Go to Facebook and change that nasty-looking url to something your fans can easily remember. Keep geeking!
