Google Transliterate IME - Type in Native Language Offline

If you liked Google Transliteration online service, there is good news for you! Google India recently announced on its official blog the launch of Google Transliteration IME software. This software lets you do what you used to do on Google Transliteration website i.e. type in your favorite language. While the site is still in operation, now you can use Transliteration services of Google without connecting to the internet.

Currently, transliteration pack is available in fourteen languages – Arabic, Bengali, Persian, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. You can download and install the transliteration pack for your favorite language from its download page. Once the pack is installed, you can switch between English and native language using either Language Bar or by configuring it in Control Panel. You can set Ctrl+Shift as a key combination to switch between languages. Currently, the pack is available for Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP (though I tried it on Windows Server 2003 and it worked fine)

Typing in local language is the same as it was on transliterate website. You just have to type in the word in plain english, which sounds similar to native language word. For example, open any application of your choice, say MS Word and if you want to type नमस्कार in Marathi, you can just type “namaskar” in English, press spacebar key and it will automatically be converted to Marathi word “नमस्कार”. In addition, it also provides options like virtual keyboard, auto-word completion, font-selection choices etc. Isn’t it cool? Just try it out and let me know your experiences.

Note: It is possible that you see boxes instead of proper letters while typing in native language. In such cases, check if you have unicode fonts installed, such as Arial Unicode MS and selected in IME’s settings menu.
