Today, Google launched its new application in the segment of social networking called, Google Buzz. The news was confirmed on the official Gmail blog. As per Google, Buzz is tightly integrated with Gmail and incorporates features like sharing text messages, videos, images etc all in real time. It also allows you to stay connected with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and incorporate live feed from Google reader.
From the sound of it, it is surely looking to be the application which was long rumored to be a Twitter Killer. You can even find the similarities between the terms used such following a person or real time status updates (read tweets!). Google has chosen a very smart strategy of incorporating the application inside already popular application (i.e. Gmail) as a separate feature, rather than launching a separate application. The clear benefit is the huge Gmail user base, which will automatically be a part of Google Buzz.
Buzz has also integrated the feature which allows a user to let people know his/her current location in real time, a prominent feature of another small start-up Foursquare which became quite popular due to this feature. So in a way, Google is aiming to kill two birds with a single stone. But it may be a long shot. If you recall, Google earlier launched a similar application called Google Latitude which let users share their location to their friends, but the application didn’t gain much fame. Going by history, it’s not new for Google to launch a new product and then discontinue it due to inactivity (see Google Catalog). So we will have to be patient and see how much buzz Google Buzz can create
As of now, I don’t see the feature rolled out to my Gmail account, but I am looking forward to try it out. If you have already tried your hands on Google Buzz, share your experiences in the comments below. Meantime, here is the small introductory video which Google has posted on official Google Buzz site:
