Google’s “Search Near Me Now” – Potential for Ad Revenue

January 10, 2010

Google recently launched a new feature on its homepage for iPhone and Android phones called “Search Near Me Now“. The basic concept behind this feature is very simple. Suppose that you are traveling in a New York City and you are just out on 56th street. You were in hurry,  missing your breakfast early morning and you want to take a quick bite before you proceed to sleepy meetings. But you are not sure where the closest Subway outlet is. In such case, you can just snap your phone up and click “near me now” link and it will show you the nearby Subway outlets within seconds.

Android phones use its built-in GPS technology to track your current position and search for the nearby places. Not only that, with new “Explore Right Here” option, you can get to know about the quality of restaurants, people reviews, menu choice and lot more. Search includes nearby malls, coffee shops, bars, restaurants, ATMs and so on.

While Google has been promoting it as a feature to help people easily and quickly find out nearby places, nobody can deny that it has a great potential for big ad revenue for Google. Taking in consideration the latest acquisition of mobile ad firm AdMob and launch of first google phone, Nexus one, Google is aggressively looking out for mobile market as its next big AdSense market. It’s not long before we see a lot of local shops and restaurants  competing hard to get into the “Near Me Now” search. Who can say,  “Search Near Me” might just turn out to be the next BIG thing!
